My Tops of 2015 - March

FOCUS was an average con movie, following down the same path as all con movies. It was nice to see Will Smith good again.

THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL is perfect for an afternoon viewing. Too bad it doesn't improve on anything from the first film.

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY was a little better than the book but that still means it's a god awful creation. A boring time with S&M and the pathetic couple that engage in it.

Worst Films of 2015

What to Watch This Week

Nothing really to offer up viewing this weekend, which means more time for the NCAA tournament for you. Just make sure to look at any of the titles in your queue that are set to expire on 4/1. Of the movies set to premiere on Wednesday, your best bets are the Coen Brothers' cult classic The Big Lebowski, the great death penalty drama Dead Man Walking, Michael Mann's early cool crime drama Thief, and the legendary mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap.

New Streaming Titles I Previously Forgot to Mention

The movie that gave George Clooney an Oscar, Syriana; forgo its eventual airing on ABC Family and binge on the lighthearted witch comedy Practical Magic; the hilariously cheesy sharkfest Deep Blue Sea; the IFC one season wonder Garfunkel and Oates; Milos Forman's operatic drama Amadeus; and the ill-timed release of Charlie Victor Romeo, a filmed play about airplane emergencies.

I'll see you again next Friday.

What to Watch This Week

Bloodline is the latest of Netflix's drama endeavors and has a great pedigree of actors (Kyle Chandler, Sissy Spacek, Ben Mendelsohn, Linda Cardellini), so you should at least have a taste of it this weekend. Art theater fans will want to check out all three cuts of The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby and figure out there preferred edit (Hint: it's "Her"). Bad movie lovers will of course want to check out God's Not Dead, the dreadful Christian movie that I named as the 2nd worst film of 2014.

New Streaming Titles I Previously Forgot to Mention

Oliver Stone's misguided political comedy/cult gem W.; torture porn for everyone with the first four films of the Saw franchise; and Rob Reiner continues his directorial descent with the lame old people comedy And So It Goes.

I'll see you again next Friday.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - Review

The old British birds living out their final years in a rundown but luscious Indian hotel return in this generically satisfying sequel. This time around, director John Madden and his crew strangely decided to put more of the focus on Dev Patel's Sonny, as he tries to juggle his upcoming wedding, a rivalry with a more economically stable friend, and a sudden visit from a possible hotel investigator (Richard Gere) in the span of a few days. It's an odd misdirection for the film, especially since it causes the former film's main characters to receive paltry sitcom-like subplots this time around: Judi Dench's new job may interfere with her new relationship with Bill Nighy; Ronald Pickup's struggles with monogamy leads to a deadly running gag; and Celia Imrie flip-flops between two admirers, both of whom of course arrive at the same party at the same time. The much publicized reemergence of Penelope Wilton's character also ends up being dipped heavily in weak sauce, as she proceeds to bring little to no abrasion to her former lover and friends. Only Maggie Smith and Lillete Dubey get any significance besides Patel's plight, and that's mainly because the former is a mother figure to Patel and the latter is his real mother. Despite these many misgivings, the film is at least adequate and serviceable for an afternoon watch, preferably when it arrives on video. You won't get the same meat and potatoes from the first one but you will once again be swayed by Thomas Newman's lovely score and the pleasing, melancholic tone of the picture.

FINAL REVIEW: 3 / 5

What to Watch This Week

A near dry week. Catch up with any titles that are set to expire by month's end this weekend and the first half of the week. Then, treat yourself on Thursday with the documentary Life Itself, Steve James' love-letter to one of his biggest champions, the movie critic Roger Ebert. You could also give V/H/S: Viral a shot but nearly all critical notices have been negative for this entry of the found footage horror anthology series.

New Streaming Titles I Previously Forgot to Mention

One of 2014's most acclaimed features, the black comedy/morality play Force Majeure; the second season of great cult series Danger 5; unjust Best Picture Winner Crash; and Larry Flynt and his signature magazine go under the microscope with Back Issues: The Hustler Magazine Story.

I'll see you again next Friday.

What to Watch This Week

Binge-watch again this weekend with Netflix's latest original series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Later in the week, you can give How To Train Your Dragon 2 a chance. I personally thought it was a disappointing followup to the original masterpiece, albeit still a satisfactory movie, but you might have a better opinion of it.

New Streaming Titles I Previously Forgot to Mention

Martin Scorsese's no. 1 masterpiece Taxi Driver; Don Bluth's no. 1 masterpiece The Secret of NIMH; 90's comic book cult film Tank Girl; Adam Sandler's best comedic film Billy Madison; the period piece The Madness of King George; Best Picture winner Wings; parking lot terror-fest P2; and the movie that created the YA plague we are still suffering from, Twilight.

I'll see you again next Friday.
