Trailer Review - Jem and The Holograms

Jem and The Holograms
Official Trailer
Watch It Here

Person of Interest: Aubrey Peeples as the boring re-imagined Jerrica/Jem, Ryan Guzman as the boring re-imagined Rio, Juliette Lewis as the gender-swapped Eric(a) Raymond, Molly Ringwald as Jerrica's aunt, and Stefanie Scott, Hayley Kiyoko, Aurora Perrineau as The Holograms. No Misfits at all.

Scene Pop: "We're going to be FAMOUS!" in the most irritating voice imaginable.

Briggs Breakdown: One original song (which sounds dreadful), a weak trashing of a makeup table, YouTube exploitation, and an One Direction song being used for a musical drama about a female pop group.

Effective?: No, no, no. The trailer is explicitly trying to court female teenagers but everything about feels old and dated already: It pushes the director as being the guy who did the Justin Bieber doc that no one remembers or cares about anymore and tries to proclaim the film as the next Pitch Perfect despite it looking like something from the 80s. Additionally, those who remember and/or loved the original animated series are severely whiplashed by the quality being present.

Check it Out?: No. It looks to be a shallow bastardization of everything that made the show a pop culture hit; just look at the part where "Showtime, Synergy!" is now "Showtime Synergy". Plus, its script is ripped straight from the Josie and The Pussycats adaptation, right down to the evil female record executive and her gay subordinate. While that movie will continue to be a cult classic, this one will quickly die a quick death at the box office, in October no less!
